Fictions

An immersive suite composed by Pattishall, inspired by the short stories of Jorge Luis Borges.

Commissioned by the Catskill Jazz Factory, Fictions draws its inspiration from the short stories of Jorge Luis Borges, the Argentine author and poet widely regarded as one of the greatest writers of the 20th century. Translating the fleeting density of Borges' writing into music, Fictions is scored as a set of miniatures that fuses a chamber music sensibility with a virtuosic improvising ensemble.

Pattishall's suite of compositions draws on a broad range of musical influences, including tango and Argentine folk music, Romantic-era symphonic tone poems, klezmer and Balkan folk traditions, and a broad cross-section of 20th century classical music. Pattishall uses these various styles to weave an intricate network of reference and allusion. Fictions is a recipient of the 2019 Aaron Copland Fund Recording Grant.
